It’s so much better when you see people cosplaying from recent animes and less well known ones, which I saw quite a lot of at Supanova.

You’re somewhat lucky, there were cosplayers from a decent amount of series. If you go to an event here, most you’ll see will be Bleach, Death Note, Vampire Knight and Naruto characters. There are indeed other characters being cosplayed, but it seems that the beginners restrict themselves to these series.
